Dear Readers,
Welcome to this month's issue of CLASS, the College's monthly update of news and events.
March is Women's History Month. It is the one month of the year when we pause to trace the meandering path of the progress which American women have followed as they have progressed towards more gender equality. The theme of this year's celebration is "writing women back into history," an oblique reference to the continuing tendency to render the contributions and accomplishments of women invisible in written evocations of the past. In this way, the theme reminds us all of the very reason why this month of consciousness-raising and truth-telling about the role of women in the national and global saga of human progress is necessary.
In this issue of CLASS, we celebrate not only important moments in women history as revealed in the work of our faculty but we also highlight the outstanding contributions of current women faculty and students who make history every day through their research and teaching and community outreach and engagement. It is our pleasure to share with you the legacy that they are creating daily as they contribute to the extension of the path toward gender equality.
TOP STORY
Black Deaf women exemplify perseverance and achievement
A panel discussion on life in the American South as experienced by five Black Deaf women was recently organized and presented by the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders.

|
The panel members referred to themselves as Deaf with a capital "D" to reflect their immersion in a unique culture that does not view the inability to hear as a disability but, rather, as a state of being that should be embraced and respected. Department Chair Lynn Maher said the event was the first public discourse in Houston about the contributions of Black Deaf women. Dean John Roberts praised the program as representative of “the kind of mature and intelligent programming that has come to characterize the best in black history month and women’s history month programming at the University of Houston.” Read more.
