October 26: Russian documentary film screening
In collaboration with the annual film festival organized by the Russian Cultural Center Our Texas, Houston, the department of Modern and Classical Languages presents two shorts by Russian director Valery Balayan as part of its Global Cinema Series. The screening of Enjoy and Romance of Nadir, two documentaries that depict life in Crimea today, will be followed by a question and answer session with the director. October 26-27: Research Conference: Health Care Politics at the Crossroads
The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences’ department of Political Science is hosting a two-day conference where leading national experts will present new research on several key issues of health care politics in the post-2016 U.S. political environment. Professor Eric M. Patashnik from Brown University will give the keynote address titled, Unhealthy Politics: The Battle Over Evidence-Based Medicine on Oct. 26 at 6p.m. in the UH Student Center, Astrodome Room. On October 27, sessions will be held from 8a.m.-5:30p.m. in the C.T. Bauer College of Business Building, conference room 508. Learn more

November 1: Women of the Venezuelan Chaos
The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences is cohosting an exclusive screening of Women of the Venezuelan Chaos. In the film, five Venezuelan women from different backgrounds and generations draw a portrait of their country as it collapses under the worst social, economic, power, and political crisis in its 200-year history. Prior to the screening, there will be a reception from 4:45p.m.-6:00p.m. in the Faculty Café located in the Ezekiel W. Cullen building, room 31. The movie’s introduction and screening will begin at 6:15 p.m. at the UH Student Center Theater. Following the movie there will be a Q&A session. This event is free and open to the public. Learn more

November 2-3: International Literature Festival Houston 2017 featuring English and Spanish poetry contest
Casa Cultural de Las Americas (CCA) and the Department of Hispanic Studies are pleased to present the International Literature Festival Houston 2017, which will be held at the A.D. Bruce Religion Center at the University of Houston November 2 from 4p.m.-8:30p.m. and November 3 from 2:30p.m.-5p.m. This event will feature the first national, university-level, poetry contest in English and Spanish which is being called Poetic Bridges. This is an exceptional and unprecedented opportunity for attendees to see a group of writers who are some of the most renown women poets from Latin America and Spain. Learn more

November 4: Write-A-Thon
Write-A-Thon is like a marathon, but instead of running, you write, participate in writing-based contests, and Glass Mountain provides lunch and snacks. To participate, grab a sponsor who will pledge money in your name either by the hour or as a set amount. All money raised benefits the Boldface Writers’ Conference. The write-a-thon will be held in the UH Writing Center, CBB 238, from 9a.m.-5p.m.

November 6: McGovern Lecture to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the National Women’s Conference
The University of Houston’s College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and co-sponsors, have invited independent scholar, renowned feminist historian, and author Martha P. Cotera to deliver the 2017 John P. McGovern Endowed Lecture in Family, Health and Human Values on Monday, November 6 at 6 p.m. in the UH Cullen Performance Hall. Special guests at the event will include Gloria Steinem, Charlotte Bunch, and Melba Tolliver who all participated in the 1977 conference. Cotera’s lecture serves as the keynote address for a two-day conference commemorating the 40th anniversary of the historic 1977 National Women’s Conference held in Houston, Texas. Learn more

November 6-7: The National Women’s Conference: Taking 1977 into the 21st Century
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the National Women’s Conference held November 18-21, 1977. At this momentous event, 2,000 elected delegates and around 32,000 observers descended upon Houston, Texas, to participate in the first and only federally funded National Women’s Conference in U.S. history. In honor of this moment, UH is hosting a two-day conference bringing together former participants and dynamic scholars. The conference will include a roundtable discussion with Gloria Steinem, Charlotte Bunch, and Melba Tolliver discussing the legacy of the Houston Conference. The Graduate School and the Office of the Provost invite you to the 3rd Annual Graduate Research and Scholarship Projects (GRaSP) Day. This event will showcase the rich array of groundbreaking research undertaken by University of Houston graduate students across all disciplines, provide networking opportunities, and celebrate the research, scholarship and creative endeavors of our students. December 1: $tart $mart: Salary-Negotiation Workshop
Learn how the gender wage gap affects people’s lives, how to develop a personal budget to determine salary needs, how to benchmark salary and benefits, and how to negotiate for their first salary out of college. $tart $mart is an interactive American Association of University Women workshop co-presented by the Women and Gender Resource Center and Women’s, Gender & Sexuality Studies Program that is designed to give college women the confidence and skills they need to earn fair compensation. December 14: CLASS Convocation Fall 2017
The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) Convocation will take place Thursday, December 14, 2017, 10a.m. at NRG Arena. Guest tickets are not required for this event. Families and friends are encouraged to attend. Convocation will include Summer 2017 graduates and Fall 2017 bachelor’s, master’s and Ph.D. degree candidates from CLASS. Students are eligible to participate in CLASS Convocation if they will complete all degree requirements by the end of the Fall 2017 semester. At CLASS Convocation all graduates and graduation candidates will be individually recognized – each have the opportunity to have their names (along with any honors) called as they cross the ceremonial stage.
