Before the spring semester winds down, University of Houston undergraduates will showcase recent research projects for peers and the public.
UH’s Spring Undergraduate
Research Symposium on April 12 will spotlight the work of more than 75
students from all academic disciplines. The event kicks off with oral
presentations from 1:30 – 3 p.m. in UH’s Honors College Commons. Poster
presentations are 4 – 6 p.m. in the university’s Rockwell Pavilion. The Honors
College Commons and Rockwell Pavilion are on the second floor of UH’s
M.D. Anderson Library.
“By hosting a spring research symposium, we are providing students with another opportunity to present their work and to get even more undergraduates excited about the prospect of conducting research,” said Karen Weber, director of the Office of Undergraduate Research and the event’s organizer.

Students presenting works during the Spring Undergraduate Research Symposium have participated in the Provost’s Undergraduate Research Scholarship programs, the senior honors thesis program and other mentored research this year.
Among the oral presentations to be delivered is journalism major Michael Carrell’s “U.S. Media Coverage of the Humanitarian Crisis in Tibet.” His mentor for this project is Lindita Camaj, assistant professor of communication.
“My presentation will address the humanitarian crisis in Tibet and the type of coverage that Tibet has received from major U.S. media over the past 10 years,” Carrell said. “It also focuses on the frames that media uses to present the coverage of the crisis, and the extremes that Tibetans are going to in order to receive news coverage. For myself, I think this project helped enlighten me to how the media covers international news and what drives the coverage of particular stories or issues.”
Poster presentations will include “Automated Detection of Oil Spills Using Infrared Optical Remote Sensing Adapted to an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle” by electrical and computer engineering major Gustavo Azevedo (mentored by Wei-Chaun Shih, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering); “Coastal Resilience Study On West Shore Galveston Bay” by architecture majors Rose Lee and “Coastal Resilience and Sustainability: Preserving and Protecting Land Vales in the Houston-Galveston Coastal Region” by Ian Spencer. Architecture professor Thomas Colbert is mentoring Lee and Spencer.
