Lecture Series on Nation’s Economic Crisis Welcomes Former Branch Banking and Trust Chief

The current economic climate in the nation has prompted varied theories and perspectives on the cause and the damage.   John Allison, the retired chairman and CEO of Branch Banking & Trust, comes to the University of Houston to share his views on “The Long-Term Consequences of the Financial Crisis.”

The event is planned for 4 p.m., Wednesday, April 4 in the UH Honors College Commons. It is part of the “Economic Crisis: Causes, Consequences, and Remedies” series of public lectures sponsored by the Honors College, the Phronesis Program in Politics and Ethics, and the Hobby Center for Public Policy (HCPP). The event is free and open to the public.

“Many of the pressing moral and political issues for our students right now are economic, and students should have the critical tools to evaluate the policy issues at stake and the principles underlying and dividing them,” said Jim Granato, professor and director of the HCPP. The center recently was the recipient of a philanthropic gift that created “The BB&T Program in the Ethics and Politics of Capitalism.”

Allison will share his thoughts on the short- and long-term solutions to the economic climate, as well as the roles of government policies and financial institutions.

Branch Banking & Trust (BB&T) is the 10th largest financial services holding company headquartered in the U.S.  Under Allison’s guidance, BB&T grew to more than $152 billion in assets.  Allison has been recognized by the Harvard Business Review as one of the top 100 most successful CEOs in the world in the last 10 years.
