The University of Houston, one of the most diverse public research universities in the nation, is among the Top 100 Colleges conferring degrees on Hispanic students, according to The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education magazine.
The annual list ranks UH among the nation’s top 20 colleges and universities conferring bachelor degrees and doctoral degrees to Hispanic students. This year, UH is ranked 14th on both lists, up from its 15th and 16th rankings, respectively, last year.
“Diversity is a strength, for our university, as it is for our city," said Provost and UH Senior Vice President/UH System Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs John Antel. “Our world-class faculty are committed to our students—to prepare them for the global marketplace and to helping them make a positive contribution to their community.”
The information is compiled from data from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) and its Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System
The list includes rankings for individual academic programs. The UH College of Optometry is ranked third among like programs, while the College of Pharmacy is ranked seventh. Additionally, the College of Architecture, School of Communication, College of Business (business and marketing program) and Interdisciplinary Studies program are ranked in the Top 10.
Among other UH institutions, the University of Houston-Downtown is ranked 32nd for conferring bachelor degrees on Hispanic students and fifth in the area of multidisciplinary studies. The University of Houston-Clear Lake is ninth in that academic program.
Overall, the rankings show an increase in the number of Hispanic students across the country earning higher education degrees, with women outnumbering men.
“Women are projected to continue to earn more than 50 percent of professional degrees in the foreseeable future,” according to the magazine.
Recently, the University of Houston was designated an Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) by the U.S. Department of Education Office of Postsecondary Education. UH is one of only three Tier One public research universities in the nation with this designation, and the only such institution in Texas.
