Student Dance Moves On View During 'UH Goes To The Barn'

University Dance Theatre Presents Annual Performance March 27 at Barnvelder Arts Complex

University Dance Theatre presents "UH Goes To The Barn" March 27 at Houston's Barnvelder Movement/Arts Complex. Performances begin at 7:30 p.m.

Houston’s Barnvelder Movement/Arts Complex – or the Barn – hosts some of the city’s most innovative and provocative performances. With that in mind, it only makes sense that the venue will be the site of an evening of dance works created and performed by emerging student talents.

University of Houston choreographers and dancers are hard at work putting final touches on works that will be on view during “UH Goes To The Barn.” Presented by the University Dance Theatre, this showcase will kick off at 7:30 p.m., March 27 at the Barn (2201 Preston St.). Tickets for this event are $10 and will be available at the door. For additional details, visit www.theatredance.uh.edu or call 713-409-2838.

The show is entirely produced, performed and choreographed by UH students. Works will include:

  •  “S.I.R.” by Erica Henderson features seven dancers and addresses the power of faith during one’s personal journey.
  • “Blank Page” by Marcela Acosta features an instrumental backing track filled with the echo of a typewriter.
  • An untitled work by Erica Henderson will address the significance of hair among African-Americans.
  • Stephanie Sermas’ “Blood Pressure” explores human adversity.

The University Dance Theatre (UDT) is a UH student organization dedicated to promoting awareness of dance activities and programs. Members are enrolled in at least one dance course at UH. Each spring, UDT produces a show of original student works.

UH is the only university in Houston to offer a bachelor of arts degree and teacher’s certification in dance. Components of UH’s dance program include the Center for Choreography, University Dance Theatre (student organization) and the UH Dance Ensemble (the university’s pre-professional dance company).
