Science Engineering Fair Will Be at UH This Weekend

Fair is a Showcase for the Region’s Top Young Scientists and Engineers

Middle school and high school students from Houston and across Southeast Texas will be on the University of Houston campus Friday and Saturday, Feb. 27-28, for one of the nation’s largest competitive science and engineering fairs.

The 56th Science Engineering Fair of Houston (SEFH) will be held at the UH Athletic & Alumni Center, 3100 Cullen Boulevard. The awards ceremony will be Sunday, March 1, at the UH Cullen Performance Hall (Entrance 1 off Calhoun Road). All projects will be on display for public viewing at the Athletic & Alumni Center from 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Sunday.

Renu Khator, president of UH and chancellor of the UH system, said the SEFH and similar events play a role in solving the nation’s shortage of engineers and other technical professionals. “It is not an exaggeration to say the future of our country, and the world, rests with the intelligent, innovative minds of our young people,” she said. “It is in everyone’s interest to encourage our best and brightest, and UH feels privileged to have that opportunity. I salute the students and applaud the teachers who have inspired and instructed them.”

The student competitors at the SEFH represent more than 100 schools, including public, private and charter schools, as well as home-schooled students. All have won local science fair competitions. Winners will travel to the Texas competition in San Antonio in March. Grand award winners will be eligible to attend the INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, in May.
