Social Work and Election 2016: 'Super Tuesday Party for the Parties'

After a season of debates, campaign stops and mudslinging, presidential candidates approach the March 1 presidential primary for their share in the big prize—661 Republican delegates and 865 delegates for the Democrats. Twelve states and one U.S. territory will be voting on Super Tuesday.

Students and faculty from the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work will be watching the returns and learning about how primaries and caucuses work.

“Super Tuesday: Party for the Parties” is planned from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 1 in the Graduate College of Social Work, room 101.

“This is an exciting opportunity for social work students and our community to have fun together while learning in real-time about the processes by which U.S. Presidential candidates are selected,” said Suzanne Pritzker, assistant professor in the college whose expertise includes political social work. “As such an important day in the primary election season, Super Tuesday is a great time for the GCSW community to come together to discuss the critical challenges facing our country and the candidates who may lead us in facing them."

Pritzker has conducted studies with social work students and millennials regarding their involvement in the political process.

The event is part of the college’s #SocialWorkVotes effort that has included panel discussion on issues, workshops on social workers becoming engaged in politics and voter registration drives.
