UH to Celebrate a Trio of Awards Monday for Excellence in Diversity

University of Houston, UH Law Center and UH School of Nursing to be Honored

The publisher of INSIGHT Into Diversity Magazine, Lenore Pearlstein, will be in Houston to officially present three Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) awards to the University of Houston at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 12 in the Elizabeth D. Rockwell Pavilion on the second floor of the M.D. Anderson Library at UH. The presentation will be a celebration of UH becoming the first institution to earn three such awards in a single year.

The three awards will be presented to the University of Houston, the UH Law Center and the UH School of Nursing during Monday’s ceremony and also will be featured in the magazine’s November 2016 issue. The HEED Award is the only one of its kind.

The oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education, INSIGHT into Diversity Magazine bestows the HEED Award annually to U.S. colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion, which are hallmarks of UH. The award process is a comprehensive and rigorous one, with an application that includes questions relating to student and employee recruitment and retention, as well as continued support from leadership for diversity and other benchmarks.

Pearlstein says a holistic approach is taken in reviewing each application, with particular emphasis put on finding institutions where diversity and inclusion are woven into the work being accomplished every day across campus. Institutions are selected based on their exemplary performance in these initiatives, focusing on all aspects of diversity, including gender, race, ethnicity, veterans, people with disabilities and members of the LGBTQ community.

With students coming to the University from nearly 140 nations, UH is recognized as the second-most diverse public research university in the nation by U.S. News & World Report and is designated both as a Hispanic-Serving Institution and an Asian American Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution by the U. S. Department of Education.

UH President and Chancellor Renu Khator and Provost Paula Myrick Short will offer opening remarks, and Assistant Provost for Faculty Recruitment, Retention, Equity and Diversity Erika Henderson will introduce Pearlstein. Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Services Richard Walker will deliver closing remarks. Local elected officials also will be in attendance.
