UH President’s Fall Address Set for Wednesday, Oct. 18

Khator Will Highlight Achievements, Set Course for the Future

Renu Khator, president of the University of Houston and chancellor of the UH System, will deliver the President’s Fall Address on Wednesday, offering a recap of the University’s achievements during her 10 years on campus.

The address will begin at 10 a.m. in the Moores Opera House on the UH campus.

Khator began the tradition of an annual fall address after assuming office in January 2008.  In that time, the University has grown tremendously. A few highlights:

  • Enrollment reached more than 45,000 students this fall, a record, with a student body rated the second most diverse university in the country. UH has grown an average of 3.1 percent each year during the past decade.
  • Graduates earn an average starting salary of nearly $50,000, well above the national average of $41,500, while cost of attendance and average student debt remain well below the national average.
  • A chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious academic honor society, was established in 2015.
  • UH was designated a research university with “very high research activity” by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching in 2011. That is the highest classification and the equivalent of Tier One status.

Khator also oversees the UH System, which includes UH-Downtown, UH-Clear Lake and UH-Victoria. Campuses in Sugar Land and Katy also have grown tremendously, with construction of a new campus in Katy scheduled to begin next spring.

Khator has stressed building both the faculty and the research enterprise at UH. Under her guidance, the number of members of the National Academy of Science and National Academy of Engineering on the faculty has grown to 19; annual research expenditures now top $160 million.
