Engage with the College of Medicine and other campus constituents as we explore the depths of data visualization and reports using PowerBI, a Microsoft Office Tool that allows users to connect data to in-depth reporting experiences and link key performance indicators to relevant decision making.

UH By the Numbers has information not only on student/faculty demographics but also graduation rates, degrees awarded, semester hour completion, and financial aid.  It also has data on the upcoming summer and fall semesters to help plan for course enrollments and newly admitted students to your departments and colleges.   Learn how to use UH By the Numbers to get the data you need for your assessment reports, grant applications, and student or faculty demographics.

August 11 – 8:30 a.m. – Noon (Teams or In-Person) – Why We Do Assessment

Presented by Dr. Joseph Curtin and Paul Turcotte

Assessment should be done with a purpose that goes beyond accreditation and statutory requirements.  Assessment should be part of the “Culture of Continuous Improvement” and we want to actively build the culture of assessment regardless of what/how it is named (Quality Enhancement Plan - QEP, Continuous Quality Improvement - CQI, Total Quality Management – TQM, PDCA Cycle - Plan – Do – Check – Act). 

Assessment should be done with the intent on evaluating the intended outcomes at the course – program- department- college and university levels.  Part of the assessment process is the help verify that goals/outcomes targeted at each level in each area align with the strategic goals (outcomes) of the University as defined in the strategic plan:  At UH these goals are:

1)      Student Success

2)      Nationally Competitive Research

3)      Social Responsibility

4)      Nationally Relevant Athletics

5)      Competitive Funding

This session will stress the importance of intentional alignment with the UH outcomes and the data collection efforts that will provide the appropriate measures to provide the information and evidence needed for our improvement cycles.

Learn about Tableau, an interactive and powerful data visualization tool that is used widely across the university. In this session, we will demonstrate how to connect to data, prep, and create visual analytics for data-driven decision-making. We will also share a few tips and tricks that can be useful in utilizing the tool.
